호그와트로 함께 갈래 - The man with two faces

결국 놀라운 상황이 벌어지지. 전혀 예상하지 못한.

마지막에 두 사람이 함께 서게 되는 거야. 마법사의 돌 - sorcerers stone -을 끝까지 추적한 두 사람. 

해리 포터와 스네이프? 

No No No!

해리 포터와 터번을 쓴 교수 퀴렐!

뒤로 나자빠질 지경이지. 지독한 말더듬이에다 겁도 많고 허둥지둥하는 퀴렐이 퀴디치에서 해리를 죽이려하고, 끝까지 마법사의 돌을 노렸다니...

그것도 진실한 사람의 갈망을 온전히 보여주는 거울 'mirror of erised' 앞에서 말이야.

"This mirror is the key to finding the stone." Quirrell murmured. ...

"I don't understand is the stone inside the mirror? Should I break it?"

Harry's mind was racing.

'What I want more than anything else in the world at the moment, is to find the stone before Quirrell does. So if I look in the miiror, I should see myself finding in - which means I'll see where it's hidden! But how can I look without Quirrell realizing what I'm up to?"

바보같은 퀴렐. 허겁지겁 마지막까지 달려왔지만 마법사의 돌과 거울의 비밀스런 관계는 알지 못하지. 혼자 궁시렁거리던 퀴렐은 결국 자신의 주인을 불러내지.

"What does this mirror do? How does it work? Help me Master!"

...

Quirrell reached up and began to unwrap his turban. The turban fell away.  Where there should have been a back to Quirrell's head, there was a face, the most terrible face Harry had ever seen. It was chalk white with glaring red eyes and slits for nostrils, like a snake.

그는 바로 볼드모트야. 퀴렐의 몸에 기생한.

결국 그는 해리의 호주머니 속에 마법사의 돌이 있다는 걸 눈치채고는 외치지.

"Now give me the stone, unless you want her to have died in vain."

"Never"

Harry sprang toward the flame door, but the Voldemort screamed "Seize him!" and the next second. Harry felt Quirrell's hand close on his wrist. At once, a needle-sharp pain seared across Harry's scar ...

"Seize him! SEIZE HIM!" shrieked Voldemort again, and Quirrell lunged, knocking Harry clean off his feet, landing on top of him, both hands around Harry's neck - Harry's scar was almost blinding him with pain, yet he could see Quirrell howling in agony. 

"Master, I cannot hold him - my hands - my hands!"

"AAAARCH"

마법사의 돌 대단원이지.

물론 뒤에 화기애애한 장면이 있긴 하지만, 여기만큼 극적일 수 있을까?

작가 조앤 롤링이 정말 혼신의 힘으로 썼다는 걸 실감할 수 있어. 그가 표현했던 영어 그대로 써보니까 알겠어.
